Case Study Overview

When our founder Sahar Mansoor embarked on her journey to living a lifestyle congruent to her values towards zero waste, she shares,

"I realized that it was impossible to find personal care and home care products that didn’t contain harmful chemicals and weren’t packaged in plastic. In response to this problem, I wanted to create a company that mirrored the values of zero waste, ethical consumption and sustainability. I wanted to make it easy for other people looking to consume more mindfully and to encourage others to produce less waste."

That is how Bare Necessities was born with Sahar, as the CEO, and Aseya Apa (pictured below) as the first member of the manufacturing team!

Mission

By producing zero-waste products, hosting educational workshops and conducting sustainability consulting services, we seek to change the narrative on waste in India and demonstrate that any individual can positively impact their community, through inspiring others to reduce waste and think consciously about their impact on the world!

Employee Well-Being

Employee well-being can have different dimensions to it such as:

Job Satisfaction: Does the individual feel they are adding value to the organisation with what they do?

Financial Security: Is the individual being paid enough for the work they do?

Emotional Health: Is the individual mentally doing well in terms of handling emotions?

Physical Health: Is the individual provided some form of security by the company when faced with health issues?

Social Connectedness: How inclusive is the work culture?

Our approach

In relation to our work culture, we spoke to our founder and CEO, Sahar Mansoor, on the manufacturing team, its inception and their journey through the years.

Q: Hi Sahar, how was the transition from making your own products to heading an entire manufacturing team?

Sahar: It all began with me making these products in my moms’ kitchen every day, after my day job at SELCO. I then chanced upon Aseya Apa, the wife of the security guard at my mom’s school, who joined me.

Nazeema, our help at home, also pitched in part-time, to help us out. As months progressed, we began getting more orders which was when Shabreen came along.

Shabu, as we fondly call her, was resolute right from the start. Soon we were led to Reshma, a single mother focused on giving her son the best life possible. And here we are today, a three-member manufacturing team, determined to give their all to accomplish the day’s tasks.

Q: Was it a conscious decision to have an all-women manufacturing team?

Sahar: Growing up in a very diverse environment, filled with courageous women full of love, I decided to have a team that resonated the same vibe. In a country where women of lower socioeconomic standards are generally neglected and not given the opportunities they deserve, I was determined to go against the tide. Shabu, for example, was a sales representative at Commercial Street. The long working hours coupled with uneven working wages didn’t let her shine to her true potential.
