Accidental Entrepreneur: How Sahar Mansoor Founded Bare Necessities

Sahar Mansoor is the Founder and CEO at Bare Necessities —a hub for zero-waste living in India. Sahar has been living a low impact lifestyle for the past 5 years. She has built Bare Necessities, a social enterprise that produces zero waste personal and lifestyle products. Sahar is also a Penguin Random House author of the book titled “Bare Necessities - How to lead a Zero Waste Life”

For her work in changing the narrative on waste in India, Sahar has been recognized by Google India as ‘The Most Inspiring Indian of the Year’. 

A University of Cambridge alumna with a background in environmental policy, Sahar formerly worked at the World Health Organization in Geneva and SELCO Foundation on renewable energy projects. 

Sahar is a Climate Reality Leader, a Climate Launchpad mentor and a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum. Sahar has also appeared on Al Jazeera Stream and NDTV live news shows talking about plastic pollution

  • Back in 2010, a staggering 12 million metric tons of plastic waste entered the ocean, breaking down into harmful microplastics, which now infiltrate the stomachs of birds and sea creatures (which comes from products and packaging we use!)

  • The urgency to address this issue becomes critical, with the production of waste outnumbering other environmental pollutants, including greenhouse gases 

  • Everyday thousands of waste pickers segregate broken glass, sanitary napkins and needles all with their bare hands, making waste a social justice issue as much as an environmental issue

Our  three online courses are  UNESCO Recognised as a Climate Action Resource and have over 70,000 enrolments.

We continue partnering with a large number of organisations and their CSR teams for their employee engagement and employee awareness programs through sustainability-themed employee workshops, and eco-friendly gifting for employees throughout the year; including our new employee welcome kits!

As of 2023, we have sold 179,547 products, which has saved 103,096,156 plastic units either going into the landfill or straight into the environment whether that is on land or into waterways. 

From eco-friendly, zero waste gift bundles, to plant-based shampoo bars, cold-processed soaps, and compostable packaging, our goal is to always provide the daily necessities, in the most sustainable manner possible!

We have had a direct impact on 372,577 people and an indirect involvement with 1,73,449 through markets, talks and workshops. We have a following of 120K across our social media platforms too. 

Our strong intent to change the narrative on waste in India and beyond, demonstrates that any individual can positively impact their community, through inspiring others to reduce waste and think consciously about their impact on the world.
