The theory behind measuring impact is that through accurate data and metrics we can assess whether we have achieved our aims and objectives. This is important as a business because we are able to illustrate what we are doing, why we have done it in a certain way, whether what we have been doing has been achieved and whether our focus area has gained the benefits that we desired for it.
Therefore, we have developed a system that relies on unit sales to highlight the amount of plastic waste diverted from landfill, along with data on outreach (our awareness services such as workshops, talks and markets where we are able to speak to people about the concept of sustainability) and more defined data on other areas that holds value for the overall functionality of Bare Necessities.
The value of this as a small social business is that this enables strategy through uniform policies and allows for a consistent voice for advocacy efforts. It also leads to credibility in the reports that we produce and the things that we say.
So, as a social enterprise that has been operating for about 4 years, tackling the global garbage crisis, we came up with a plan! We began by developing zero waste, natural and sustainable alternatives for our personal care routines and lifestyle. Next, raising awareness is the key to making an impact - so we constantly educate communities around us regarding the problem, and how we can be part of the solution, from talks + workshops to various stakeholders to online courses, to e-books to social media. As a deliverable, we then are able to help communities substitute their plastic products to more zero waste alternatives, and lastly we measure (we know this is key for absolutely anything!).Â
Doing this, as an up and coming social enterprise in an unique space, it enables strategy and a consistent voice for advocacy efforts. It also leads to credibility when communicating what we stand for!Â
Our talks + workshops have directly impacted 20,000 people while definitely leading to an indirect impact of 97,000 people through markets, talks and workshops!
Our social media is huge on impact and strong communication with a following of 43,000Â on various channels!Â
