Green & Fun Summertime Activities for your Kids!

Summertime means summer vacation! Truly one of the most blissful times to be a child. It’s the most ideal time for younglings to explore new activities, unleash their creativity and ultimately, have fun!
Here are some fun zero waste activities that we put together to keep your children engaged this summer
-
A Cooking & Baking Class
Get the tiny tots involved in the kitchen by preparing snacks or meals with little to no waste. Making simple dishes like granola bars, fruit popsicles is a lot of fun. They needn’t use the stove and at the same time get to make something from scratch!
Here’s a little recipe for No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites. It’s super quick and easy, requires just a few ingredients, and doesn’t need a stove or oven!
Ingredients:
-
Peanut Butter - 1 Cup
-
Honey or Maple Syrup - ¼ Cup
-
Rolled Oats - 1 Cup
-
Mini Chocolate Chips [Optional] - ½ Cup
-
Vanilla Extract [Optional] - 1 Tsp
Instructions:
-
In a large bowl, combine peanut butter, honey/maple syrup and vanilla extract. Stir it well until well combined
-
Stir it rolled oats until the mixture is sticky and everything is evenly combined
-
Roll the mixture into little balls
-
Place the bites on butter/parchment paper or a tray and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes for it to firm up
-
After it's chilled, you can top the bites with mini chocolate chips for some extra flavour and fun!

Gardening & Composting
Let the kids experience the joy of growing their own food by starting their own little herb, vegetable or flower garden. The scraps from cooking go into their own patch. The seeds from a tomato can go straight into the soil and they can watch it flourish! To make it a more holistic experience, teach your kids how to compost by using kitchen scraps to nourish the soil. Gardening and composting are intimate experiences with nature, giving them an opportunity to appreciate food sources and the importance of waste reduction.
A fun activity here is making seed bombs using clay, soil and native seeds. Kids can toss them into any empty patches of land and watch as these flourish into flowers or herbs over time!
Here’s how you can make a seed bomb at home:
Raw Materials:
-
Clay - Powdered or Natural - 5 Parts
-
Compost or Potting Soil - 3 Parts
-
Seeds of your choice - 1 Part
-
Water
-
A bowl
-
A tray
Instructions:
-
In a bowl mix all the dry ingredients, namely, 5 parts clay, 1 part seeds and 3 parts compost/soil
-
Slowly combine the water, adding little as you go. Mix until the mixture holds together like a playdough. Refrain from making the mixture too wet
-
Roll the mixture into small balls, about the size of a marble
-
Place the seeds on a tray and let them dry for about a day or two in a shady area
-
Once they’re dry, toss them into any space, where they can grow!

-
A Book Swap!
Set up a book swap with friends, neighbours and family. Once everyone is done reading the book of their choice, come together to have a fun discussion about the books and whom you would recommend the book to!
