Measuring & Monitoring | Setting Sustainability Standards

Measuring & Monitoring | Setting Sustainability Standards

If you’re a regular at Bare Necessities, then you’d probably know by now that we release an impact report each year. We believe that measuring our impact is essential to understand and improve our contributions to a more sustainable world.

Our impact report is an important self-assessment tool, allowing us to gauge our progress and the ultimate effect that our efforts have on the world. By sharing these metrics, we aim to offer transparency and inspire others in the industry to adopt similar practices.

For instance, our much loved personal care products have avoided using 100,000 plastic packaged personal care items and have prevented over 5000 kilograms of plastic from ending up in landfills. Similarly, our spa bars have avoided close to 40,000 plastic soap containers and the packaging has diverted over 1000 kilograms of plastic from landfills.

Especially in the domain of home care products we have been seeing so much greenwashing that is only becoming increasingly common now. It’s absolutely important to distinguish between genuine sustainability efforts and superficial claims. As a brand working in the sustainability space, our commitment to transparent practices and impact measurement, ensures that our products have tangible impact results. Furthermore, we owe it to customers as a brand to be responsible to them.

Our powder-to-liquid home care range of products has avoided 7,600 single use plastic home care products and diverted 456 kilograms of plastic waste from landfills.

Beyond numbers, there is a call taken to ensure that we include sustainability in every aspect of brand and product creation. We have invested over two years of research and development in creating our powder-to-liquid range of soaps, resulting in an in house formula that uses earth friendly ingredients and is effective for usage.

Beyond product, it extends to packaging as well. Poly Vinyl Alcohol is a synthetic polymer which is often marketed as a lining that can be dissolved. However, studies show that 75% of PVA remains in our waterways and soil systems after being dissolved and requires extremely specific conditions to biodegrade. Products packaged in PVA are on the rise. There are studies on both sides of the fence regarding PVA, and as Bare Necessities, we made the decision to steer away from this debate in the first place.

Composting is a proven method, powder-to-liquid is a mindful step, forever dispensers are part of zero waste living; so let’s use proven methods to make these formats the norm. Hence, our no-fuss solution was compostable sachets that had vegetable ink printed on them, so they can completely disintegrate into the soil.

Beyond just offering eco-friendly products, we aim to set the standard for sustainability in our industry. A testament for this is our B Corporation Certificate. By making impactful choices and transparent reporting, we aim to sow the seed of sustainability in the minds of customers and fellow businesses too.
