A Bangalore Resident’s Guide to Smarter Waste & Textile Recycling
We all know the drill: Green bin for wet waste, Blue bin for dry waste. But as our city grows and our consumption habits change, "just two" isn't enough anymore. If you’ve ever stared at an old pair of jeans or a torn bedsheet wondering, "Where on earth do I throw this?", this guide is for you.
Bangalore is evolving, and so is the way we handle our trash. Here is your quick update on the new standards of segregation and the exciting new "circular" future for your old clothes.
Level Up: The 3 Way Segregation Rule
The old binary of "Wet vs. Dry" is getting an upgrade. To truly manage the city's waste crisis, we need to think in three categories:
Wet Waste: (Kitchen scraps, food waste)
Dry Waste: (Paper, plastic, metal, glass)
Reject Waste: (Sanitary waste, hazardous household materials, and items that cannot be recycled)
By adding "Reject" as a conscious category, we prevent hazardous items from contaminating recyclables and ensure that waste pickers can handle materials safely.
What can you do with Dry Waste?
Send it to the municipality, yes! But, apart from that you can send your dry waste for recycling to dry waste collection centres in Bengaluru. Locate the nearest dry waste collection center near you on this link.
What about old clothes?
Textile waste is one of the fastest-growing contributors to landfills. Fast fashion means we buy more and throw away more. But here is the good news: Bengaluru is developing a robust system for recycling old clothes.
This isn't just about dumping clothes in a bin; it is about creating a system that is inclusive and circular.
The "Inclusive" Revolution
A major initiative involving Saamuhika Shakti, the Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), and Hasiru Dala is currently piloting a game-changing project.
They are training the backbone of our city's waste management, the waste pickers, to specifically handle textiles. Operating across dry waste collection centers in six wards, these workers are being trained to:
-
Collect all types of clothes (from heavy denim and suits to t-shirts and sarees).
-
Sort them based on fabric and quality.
-
Send them for proper recycling.
Why does this matter?
-
For the Planet: It stops your old clothes from clogging up landfills.
-
For the People: It allows waste pickers and sorters to earn more money from the valuable work they are already doing.
