A Plastic-Free Holiday Guide for this season!
The holiday season is officially here! And here’s our annual reminder to nudge you to celebrate sustainably, without missing out on any of the season’s fun and pomp.
Many of the festive practices that we partake in end up generating a hefty environmental cost, especially when it comes to plastic waste. Gift wrappers, single use decorations and cutlery can leave a lasting environmental impact long after the festivities are over.
And with that, let’s jump right into our plastic free holiday guide!
1. Plastic Free Decorations
A majority of decorations that are used during the festive season are made with plastic coated wrapping, which are super challenging to recycle at a later stage. Look instead, for reusable or sustainable options, such as wood, glass, cloth hangings, and more! Investing in some sturdy reusable decor items allows for you to significantly reduce the burden you ultimately place on the environment. You can also make your own with items you already have at home. Did you know you can make a gorgeous diya with an orange?
Take an orange and remove the pulp gently, so as to keep the shape of the peel intact. Cut in a manner, such that you have half an orange peel with you. In that peel add some oil and lower a cotton wick in it and light it up. And there you have it! A homemade candle, whose refreshing citrus fragrance is going to fill your home!
When you’re out shopping for your gifts, opt for those that are reusable, durable and plastic free. So, think of reusable cutlery sets, eco-friendly personal care products or reusable totes. Not only do they reduce plastic waste, but they foster mindful consumption. And while you’re at it, support small businesses or local artists, who prioritise sustainability by virtue of their operations and products.
Skip on all the shiny, glossy, plastic coated wrapping paper. Instead, choose reusable or sustainable options instead. To wrap your gifts you can use newspapers or butter paper, which you can embellish with some block prints or colours. Better yet, use fabric to create a beautiful Furoshiki wrapping. Not only is it eco-conscious, but adds a unique touch, making your gifts stand out.
3. Mindful Food & Beverages
Choose to serve your holiday spread with reusable plates, cutlery and cups by using steel or ceramic plates. Keep some boxes handy for handovers and use cloth napkins instead of paper tissues. When you’re out shopping for your holiday part, look to avoid individually wrapped produce, thereby skipping excess plastic packaging.
4. Sustainable Shopping
Make your purchases from eco-friendly retailers or local shops that prioritise sustainability. Carry your boxes to store your purchases in immediately. You’ll be supporting small businesses, reducing the carbon footprint that comes with mass shipping and packaging.
5. Create Lingering Memories, Not Lasting Waste
The festive season is perhaps the only time that allows for families and friends to come together to create memories to cherish for a lifetime. Therefore, consider gifting group experiences such as movie nights, outdoor activities, cooking classes and more. These would not only bring people together, fostering camaraderie, all while leaving a minimal environmental footprint.
This holiday season, choose to make a big difference. By choosing plastic free alternatives and focusing on sustainable practices, we can make our celebrations joyful and earth friendly. Happy Holidays!
