Making Sustainability a Household Term

Making Sustainability a Household Term

We work so closely with sustainability by virtue of the work that we do and over time, we’re constantly reminded of how closely it is woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Especially, in a country like India, it is ingrained in our cultural DNA too, with practices designed to reduce waste and burden on the planet. In more ways than one, these ancient practices act as a guiding compass, pointing us towards a more conscious way of living.

In contemporary times, our consumption patterns are shifting from what they used to be once. With minimalism coming increasingly to the forefront. Thrift shopping and second exchanges are gaining more traction, paving the way for a circular economy, where items are reused and repurposed rather than being discarded. In walking the talk, by befriending conscious consumption choices, our lifestyles are reflective of highlighting sustainability as a core value.

Speaking of consumption, pause for a moment and think about the items that you use daily. Right from the time that you wake up, you first use a toothbrush to a toothpaste to body washes to straws and more. Where does the packaging go? What impact do these products have on our waterways and landmasses? If they’re going to eventually land up in a landfill, while polluting waterways in all likelihood it’s not an ideal to have sitting on your shelves.

But not to worry, because there are now a plethora of zero waste, eco-friendly options available out there!

Brands out there, including us are creating products that result in minimal to no waste products from bamboo toothbrushes, tooth powders to eco friendly cleaning soaps to body soaps. Furthermore, there is a commitment to adopt sustainable practices from sourcing materials responsibly to employee welfare policies. With every purchase, you’re pushing the needle towards a healthier planet.

Shifting gears to larger scale occasions that involve more people, festivals and events can very easily embrace sustainability. Simple swaps such as using biodegradable decorations, promoting local vendors, indulging in seasonal delicacies or encouraging carpooling, celebrations are becoming more eco conscious. Cultural traditions can be celebrated while minimising our ecological footprint, testament to show that joy and social responsibility go hand in hand.

Zooming out further, we can infer that sustainability extends beyond individual choices. It’s a community driven effort. Farms to businesses to civil societies to governments to consumers work closely in many invisible ways to create resilient systems that support both people and the planet. This intersection facilitates sustainable practices and expands it from an individual responsibility to a collective mission.

At the end of the day, sustainability is really about creating a lifestyle that respects our planet and its resources. It is about making informed choices and fostering a community that speaks the language of sustainability through its actions.
