Plastic Free Hobbies for the New Year!
Can you believe 2024 is almost going to come to an end very soon? This year has flown by and how! 2024 had so much going on and one of the resolutions I had keenly decided on was to get back into pursuing hobbies that occupied less screen time. While I was putting together a list of things that one can do, I also thought of creating a list of hobbies that don’t require screen time and are entirely plastic free too!
Gardening is always looked at as a very therapeutic and calming activity to partake in. You can give yourself the farm to fork experience in your own home by choosing to grow vegetables and herbs.
There’s something so intimate about touching the mud, planting a little germinated seed and watching it grow. It fosters a deep connection with nature. It is easily possible to take gardening a step further by repurposing materials such as glass jars and tin cans!
It’s hard to consider composting to be a hobby, isn’t it? It feels a tad bit strange to say that your favourite hobby is composting. But I think it’s time to change that perception. It’s a super satisfying activity that helps reduce food waste, while enriching your garden soil. It’s a hands-on way to contribute positively to the planet, while creating nutrient rich compost for your garden!
And hey, if you do have extra compost, feel free to gift it to your friends. It’s nature’s bounty that you can give someone!
For those who thrive in the outdoors, hiking and nature walks offer the perfect opportunity to connect with the environment. Tag your reusable water bottle along and have yourself a time amidst nature!
Experimenting with homemade, whole food recipes and you can learn how to make your own snacks or meals without packaging waste. It’s a fun, rewarding hobby that benefits your health and the planet! Cooking can be truly therapeutic, and helps you get closer to the food that we nourish ourselves with each day. And the fruits of your labour in the kitchen, can very well become great gifts for your friends and family!
Sewing or knitting allows you to create your own little fashion pieces from clothes to home decor, without having to rely on plastic materials and prevents you from buying new clothes. By choosing natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or wool, you’ll be reducing your reliance on fast fashion.
As the new year comes its way, it makes for an opportune time to embrace habits that align with both personal growth and sustainability. If you’re looking to make 2025 the year you take action for the planet, why not dive into hobbies that come with a sense of purpose and contribute to a cleaner and greener world? Happy new year!
