Plastic & The Climate Talk

When we think about plastic pollution, the image that often comes to mind is polluted beaches, clogged drains, or landfills overflowing with plastic bottles and bags. From the moment it is made to the moment it is discarded, plastic leaves behind a heavy carbon footprint. Almost all plastics are made from fossil fuels, and their journey, from extraction, production to transportation and disposal, releases greenhouse gases that accelerate climate change. Tackling plastic is, in effect, tackling the climate crisis.
At Bare Necessities we address this challenge by shifting mindsets from a disposable culture to one that values sustainability and reusability. Beyond raising awareness, we ensure our product packaging is entirely plastic-free and designed to be recyclable or compostable, demonstrating that mindful choices can reduce both plastic waste and its climate impact.
The way forward lies in reducing our plastic consumption, whether its in our day to day life by reducing single use plastic disposables or choosing brands that support plastic-free packaging. Embracing zero-waste living, circular economy principles, and refill models can make sustainable choices easier and more practical.
Instead of the current linear “take–make–waste” model, a circular system keeps materials in use for as long as possible through reuse, repair, and recycling. When applied to plastics, this means prioritizing refillable packaging designing products to be durable, and creating efficient systems for collection and recovery. Thereby, a circular economy offers a powerful solution to the plastic and climate crisis by rethinking how we design, use, and dispose of products.
Ultimately, tackling plastic is very much about reimaging how we live. Even the smallest change, whether it’s refusing a disposable plastic bag, supporting refill models, or choosing products with plastic-free packaging, adds up to a larger collective impact. By shifting our choices and embracing circular solutions, we not only reduce the plastic piling up in our environment but also cut down the greenhouse gases driving climate change.
